Winter Door Decor
It is always nice to come home to an inviting porch or front door decorated with some of winter’s beauty. Whether you are celebrating the holidays or just bringing a bit of nature closer to home, here are a few tips and ideas to help inspire.
Tip: If you find a color, foliage, berry or other decoration you are especially drawn to, try adding it to all 3 steps for a coordinated look.
Wreaths and Swags
Hang a wreath or swag on the door in the winter to set a cheery welcome. You can customize your door arrangement by adding dried flowers, foliage or other bobbles to a pre-made wreath or you can make one from scratch. (caution: wreath making has been reported to be addictive).
Garland can elegantly frame the door or porch, and add fragrance. It is nice to hang two pieces of equal length from the top center of the door frame and then drape it to the corners so the garland drapes in the same direction. You can use a bow or creative foliage arrangement to hide the center where the ends come together.
Tip: Measure your front door or porch railing. It is always good to know the measurements when you are getting ready to decorate. Standard doors are 6’8” tall and 3’ wide and would require two 6-7’ pieces of garland.
Add some flowers or stunning foliage to a container by the door or porch steps. Check out our December container design. Some other favorite plants for a winter entry container include conifers such as lemon cypress or Alberta spruce, black mondo grass, dusty miller pansies and Hellebore Jacob.
Add a kissing ball or hanging basket filled with greenery.
Tip: If you have a plant or empty container of soil you can simply poke evergreen branches, showy leaves, berries and pinecones into the soil for an instant ’Wow‘ that requires no additional care!
